The Kunstmuseum Winterthur accommodates one of the finest collections of modern art in Switzerland, with outstanding groups of work from the late 19th century to the present. The collection is displayed in an exceptionally fine ambience in the museum building from 1915 (Rittmeyer & Furrer) and the extension opened in 1995 (Gigon & Guyer).

Whereas the old building is dedicated to French art from around the turn of the century (van Gogh, Monet, Bonnard and Vallotton), Cubism (Braque, Gris and Léger) and to masterpieces of classical modern art (Kandinsky, Klee, Magritte and Miró), the extension building houses international contemporary art (Guston, Marden, Kelly, Richter and Merz).

Parallel to the permanent collection, the museum holds regular monographic and thematic from the same epoch. They are complemented by exhibitions of drawings and prints from the collection in the Graphics Cabinet.

The Maison d'Ailleurs (House of Elsewhere), museum of science fiction, utopia and extraordinary journeys is the only one of its kind in the world. Founded by the french encyclopedian Pierre Versins in 1976, the museum owns some fabulous collections amongst more than 40'000 books (in french, english, german and even ouzbek, plus much more), some being very old and/or rare. There are also nearly 20'000 documents and items related to science fiction and its imagery such as posters, toys, works of art and many more. This makes of the Maison d'Ailleurs a top research center for scholars, students or journalists from around the world who come here for thesis, personal studies and iconographic research. The Maison d'Ailleurs is also a museum in which more than 30 temporary exhibitions were held in the last 10 years, exploring the main themes of science fiction : space travels, games, utopia.
